Every growing company with more than one Windows PC will sooner or sooner or later face the challenge of administering individual PCs. User accounts have to be maintained multiple times, settings have to be made repeatedly, and software has to be manually installed and kept up to date.
In Windows environments consisting of several PCs, the use of a domain controller for central administration is the recommended standard. Users receive their own domain user account, which can be used to log on to any PC. Through the use of group policies (GPO) all clients receive a defined, centrally managed configuration. Starting from small adjustments such as desktop shortcuts or startup scripts, to the automatic software deployment, complex environments can be managed in a clear and and traceable manner.
For example, a domain controller can be implemented with the Windows Server 2019 Standard. Even better, with the open source software Samba a complete replacement for a Windows-based domain controller has been available since version 4. This makes it possible to set up a domain in a cost-effective and secure way on the basis of a Unix system.
A Samba domain controller based on Unix provides a solid foundation for your network. In addition to the open source and Unix-typical security aspects the elimination of licensing costs makes Samba the ideal alternative to a a Windows server.
I will gladly contribute my experience and help you with the implementation.
